Home Security FAQ

Will I get home security cameras with a standard system?

All of our featured brands offer at least one home security camera as part of their standard packages. It’s also possible to opt for additional cameras, should you need more, or even upgrade your video surveillance system to full HD night-vision. Modern home security systems give you the ability to view your video wherever you are in the world via companion mobile apps, and will alert you on your phone if one of the cameras detects movement.

Are security systems easy to use?

Yes. You won’t need any technical savvy at all to operate the home security systems we’ve recommended. Today’s systems are very smart and are equally as user friendly. Their push button or touchscreen control panels are extremely intuitive but even if you do need help, all of the companies we’ve reviewed were selected for their exceptional customer service. They also all have 24-hour live technical support should you ever need it. Once you’ve used any of today’s wireless home security systems, operating them becomes second nature.

Can I install home security systems myself?

This depends on the company and system. Some companies don’t offer a DIY option and provide professional installation only. Some companies will charge an installation fee; others will include it in the package price. If your home-security company does allow DIY installation, then their system was designed to be self-installed, and it will be extremely easy to do so. Installation will usually take an hour or less, you’ll get plenty of technical support and you won’t require any tools.

What warranty is offered on home security packages?

Every company offers some kind of warranty, and the range is actually pretty big. Equipment warranties are usually a minimum two years long but at least two companies offer limited lifetime warranties on their components. One company will simply take its equipment back for any reason after you’ve tried it out for up to a year and give you your money back. Other companies have trial periods and money-back guarantees but their terms are shorter. Since the range of warranties is so great, which may confuse a little, we have researched and selected the best home security systems out there, so you can freely compare and choose the best one for your needs.

How long does the installation process take?

This depends on the method of installation your company offers and you’ve selected. Several companies require professional installation, which takes longer. With DIY installation, now offered by many leading companies, a complete system is shipped when your contract is approved and is usually delivered free to your home arriving in just a few days. You perform the installation in about an hour with the help of tech support on the phone, and you’re good to go. Today’s components are 100% wireless and require no tools to install.

Is My Home Going to Be Monitored Around the Clock?

Your home will be monitored 24/7/365 by security professionals. Depending on the company, they will be either the system provider’s employees or work for other highly-regarded monitoring services like Criticom. Actual people spend their day watching for alert messages, determining if it’s false, and then if real, they are contacting authorities and the customer’s emergency contacts within seconds.
It may sound like you’re privacy’s being invaded and you’re being constantly watched, however, rest assured that is not the case at all. The monitors guarding your house are not spying on you. They are looking only for either false or actual alerts and don’t have the capability to be looking into your home or watching you.

How Much Does a Home Security System Cost?

Home security systems are more than just equipment. Costs are usually based on monthly monitoring fees, and those can range from as little as $19.99 for basic intrusion protection, and up to $60.00 by adding in video surveillance and home automation. Monitoring agreements require a contract of usually three years but can be as short as a year. Some companies provide a basic equipment package bundled into their monthly monitoring fees; others give equipment allowances to offset costs. At least one company requires no money down. Others charge up to $99 for system activation. DIY installation will generally save you money.
