The Big Picture - Home Security System Review

The Big Picture

It seems counterintuitive for a company to succeed by recommending that you buy less merchandise rather than more, and then giving you a 365-day money-back satisfaction guarantee to boot. Somehow, LiveWatch makes this formula work.
LiveWatch started small in rural Kansas as Safemart in 2002. Chris Johnson, its founder, was a former EMT who wanted to continue his 10-year career in helping people. He seized on affordable home security systems as a way to do that, paring down his systems to their bare essentials to return the savings to his customers.
With a 365-day ‘like it or your money-back’ guarantee and renamed LiveWatch, the sprouting young business saw phenomenal 56% revenue growth between 2009 and 2012.
Today, corporate offices are still in St. Mary’s, Kansas (population 2,600) and also Evanston, Illinois. LiveWatch has more than 100 staffers, 200,000 customers, and offers some of the lowest monthly monitoring rates and best guarantee in the home protection industry.

Nuts & Bolts - Home Security System Review

Nuts & Bolts

Of course, any home security system is only half complete with just a monitoring package. You’ll need equipment too. LiveWatch offers two basic packages, and with built-in bonuses, both end up costing $99.
In the Plug & Protect Basic package you get a Simon XT alarm panel, one wireless motion detector, two door sensors, one keychain remote, two yard signs and six window stickers.
The Plug & Protect IQ package includes all the same equipment but replaces the Simon XT with an IQ 7” Android touchscreen control panel. The IQ touchscreen has a built-in camera that photographs anyone trying to enable or disable the touchscreen.
Both control panels have battery backup and two-way voice communication.
Either package is expandable, but the IQ touchscreen package is more sophisticated and allows greater functionality for the same price.
LiveWatch’s home security packages are admittedly and intentionally pretty basic, but a long list of bells and whistles are available at modest additional cost. This includes smoke and CO detectors, glass-break sensors, flood and freeze sensors, keypads, and five different types of security cameras.
Components are fully guaranteed for two years and carry a limited lifetime warranty.
The DIY installation is simple, features 3M adhesive strips, and doesn’t even require any tools. Homeowners, renters, and small businesses are welcome as customers.

Here’s where LiveWatch really shines. Monitoring is 100% cellular and 24/7/365 through partner Criticom, a Five-Diamond central monitoring facility. Other home protection companies also use Criticom, but only LiveWatch offers ASAPer as a standard feature in all of its monitoring packages.
ASAPer is an interactive messaging hub designed to be integrated with the LiveWatch alarm system and can be accessed by any interactive phone (SMS and web access is required to deactivate alarms and participate in some functions of ASAPer), tablet or computer. What ASAPer does is cut response time down dramatically, by using existing technology more effectively. In a conventional system without ASAPer, when an event is detected by the monitoring station a dispatcher physically contacts each emergency contact one after another until they’re able to reach someone. This can slow down response time in an actual emergency. When an alert hits central monitoring, everyone on the emergency contact list is contacted simultaneously in a manner they’ve pre-selected. Response time to actual events or false alarms can be virtually instantaneous.

LiveWatch systems all feature two-way voice communication from either of the control panels, and both interface with the company’s mobile app. Alerts are sent to LiveWatch’s custom mobile app and indicate where each event is detected within the home.
A history of recent events is also available on the app, and a complete history is available through the company’s interactive website, where full account info is also available.

LiveWatch offers a full range of GE Z-Wave home automation products like fluorescent light and appliance modules, in-wall dimmer, smart switch, outdoor module, wall receptacle, and in wall on/off switch. An Advanced Z-Wave thermostat and KwikSet wireless keypad deadbolt or lever lock round out the offerings.

Good to know - Home Security System Review

Good to Know

Gaining a reputation for rapid growth, LiveWatch was recognized by FastCompany for its 56% growth in revenue between 2009 and 2012. Much of that growth is attributed to customer service, as evidenced by a 2013/14 Angie’s List Super Service Award, and LiveWatch’s current Google 4.9 Star rating. And this year, the company was recognized by the Rockefeller Foundation for its outstanding community service.
